“One ocean, one climate, one future”
After a thorough joint worldwide effort since the proposal in 1992 of the Canadian government endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the United Nations have designated June 8th to be the World Oceans Day.
Now that the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts and Islands, the World Ocean Network and The Ocean Project have been working to promote and coordinate the World Ocean Day, they are facing a new -but the most important –challenge: to use this day at the best for public mobilization on ocean matters. Due to this date, conscience has started, but things won’t change overnight.
Why should we celebrate this Oceans Day? Easy, as the ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, it regulates our climate and it gives us food and medicines, it must have a day for us to cherish and protect it.
We have taken the world’s ocean for granted, now is the time to give back. Then, what’s for us? How can we help? Let’s dress blue and encourage everyone to think about what the ocean means and by small environmental contributions we will give a big step for the oceans of our Earth. Let’s celebrate our blue planet and help protect our oceans for the future!
Participate on this day, be BLUE for one day!
