World Oceans Day!

World Ocean Day is celebrated tomorrow, June 8th, all over the world. The importance of this day is to remember that oceans are home to thousands of living beings, many of them essential for several ecosystems outside the water. Losing these species would be an environmental catastrophe for most living beings on the planet, and that is where the need to care for them lies.

It all began in 1992 during the Earth Summit where a special day was proposed to remember and organize events in favor of the oceans. In 2002 the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UNESCO began organizing beach cleaning events on June 8th, in hopes of designing a special date in which people were aware of beach cleaning programs. in 2008, this helped the UN to stipulated that starting 2009,  the World Oceans Day would be celebrated on June 8th, inaugurating this special day.

UN pacted 17 Sustainable Development Goals for 2030; these goals seek to improve the planet and life of all who live in it. Every year the World Ocean Day supported the achievement of goal 14 “underwater life”, which seeks to improve the living conditions of all aquatic species, and the ocean in general. However, this year’s celebration is special as it seeks to support a second goal, the number 5 “gender equality”; it seeks to empower women and to give equal opportunities among both genders.

Combined, these two goals aim to give women the same opportunity as men to make decisions in favour of caring for the oceans, and to participate without any discrimination. The UN organizes beach cleanings all around the world, you can check the nearest to you in this link 👇:
