Last weekend, 80 dogs and cats were sterilized in Mahahual due to the initiative of the Community Center “Wayak” along with Dolphin Discovery, Vets in Action, ADO, Costa Maya, and Maya Lost Kingdom.
For two days, the local people of Mahahual had the chance to take their pets to the sterilization campaign with no cost that took place in the elementary school “Vicente Kau Chan”, to which approximately 65 dogs and cats with their responsible owners attended. The other 15 animals that were sterilized were in street situation and the volunteers of the campaign captured them to sterilize them and then return them to where they had found them.
The locals were able to get identification nameplates for their dogs and cats; this has the purpose of giving the pets a chance of returning home in case they get lost.
“This sterilization campaign showed us that there are still many things to do in Mahahual. There were many responsible owners that took their pets to be part of the change, but there were many others that didn’t, therefore, we have to work with them even more, raising awareness through educational talks to make them understand the importance of sterilization and the care that a pet requires. For this reason our campaign “To love is to care” exists and we will keep working to take it even further” said Guadalupe Jiménez, Deputy Director of Human Value in Dolphin Discovery.
