Facts about Dolphins: Did you knew? Let’s talk about them

If you’re reading this post it’s surely because we have something in common; we love dolphins! Today we’re giving you some fun and interesting facts about dolphins that will leave you astounded!

Dolphins are marine mammals. When a baby dolphin, better known as calves just like baby cows, are born they begin swimming from the first second. Dolphins also get nursed by their mom just like humans, this nursing lasts until the calves are about eighteen months old.

We have two different ways to identify the approximate age of a dolphin, the first one is that normally when baby calves are born they have a charcoal grey color but with the passing of time they miss the dark color and get a lighter grey tone. The second one has a similitude with trees, you can tell a dolphins age just by counting the rings in their teeth, just like the rings in the trunk of the tree.

We all know that all living beings have to be hydrated at all times and they normally get this liquid by drinking water, but an interesting thing is that dolphins don’t get this water from the ocean, they hydrate themselves from the fish they eat daily. Normally all species would use their teeth to catch and chew their food, but dolphins are the exception to this, they have between eighty to one hundred teeth that they use only for catching their fish but instead of chewing them they swallow them whole.

This is not all, there are other facts about dolphins! Their sleeping habit is also quite different from other species, to be able to breathe while they take a rest, dolphins will shut down only one hemisphere of its brain, and close the opposite eye (the right eye will be closed when the left half of the brain sleeps and the other way around). Meanwhile the other half of the brain that is awake will monitor what’s happening in the environment and controls the breathing.

Dolphins usually live together in big crowds called pods, and they communicate between them by clicking, grunts and whistles. They identify each member of this pod because of their signature whistle, each dolphin has his own whistle (kind of like their name) so that way they can differentiate between other dolphins.
