The parrot is a subspecies of the Greater Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), which is distinguished by its bright green plumage and turquoise blue wings, color that is interspersed with orange rectrices to reach the bottom of the bird. A characteristic feature of this mystical bird is that just before the beak begins to stoop, a red crest protrudes.

This colorful bird is in danger of extinction due to the deforestation and fragmentation of its habitat by the extraction of wood, expansion of the agricultural and livestock frontier, and fires in the south West.

The larger green Macaw depends on large tree cavities for nesting so it is very vulnerable to selective logging of trees. Hunting for food and illegal trafficking as a pet are other significant threats.

Due to these events, a ‘ National conservation Strategy ‘ was created and declared as the city’s symbolic bird. However, these measures have not allowed to maintain and improve the population of the parrot of Guayaquil and therefore there is commemorated day.

The International Day of the parrots is the occasion to teach to protect this wonderful species, so in Zoomarine a celebration was held in honor of these amusing birds.

Educational workshops were organized in Piazza Allegria next to an exhibition of a photographic report that documents how to take care of the resident parrots of Zoomarine, carried out by the photographer Massimo Vasconi.
