Congratulations to our wonderful mommy manatee Julieta! On the morning of November 9, 2012, the sixth manatee born in Dolphin Discovery entered the world and began swimming happily with his mom Julieta, dad Romeo and “Aunt Dorothy”. The birth of this healthy baby boy marks another success in the reproduction program of Dolphin Discovery, a program that has exceeded all expectations since 2002 with the birth of 69 marine mammals under our human care: dolphins, sea lions and manatees.
Mama manatee Julieta was rescued by Dolphin Discovery ten years ago and has since lived a healthy life alongside her partner Romeo in the Dolphin Discovery Puerto Aventuras environment. This newborn manatee is her fourth offspring and her experience as a mother made this an easy birth and transition, she immediately took to caring for her youngster. The newborn measured 1.2 meters long, weighed 20 kgs and is in perfect health.
Congratulations to the staff of veterinarians, biologists and trainers at Dolphin Discovery Riviera Maya, a job well-done in ensuring the health and well-being of our manatee family. The new addition is loved by all already! (Stay tuned, we’ll be inviting the public to assist in naming the latest member of our family!)
